Those aren't cloves! They're redwood sorrel (<i>Oxalis</i>) and they're completely edible. Next time you see 'em beneath redwoods, taste 'em. The amazing thing is that they're used to low light (living beneath redwoods will do that to you), so if they're hit by direct sunlight, they'll fold up and you can even watch it happen. They're huge so that they can absorb up all those low light for photosynthesis. I also believe they're called settler's or digger's lettuce because the '49ers lived off 'em during the gold rush. 2.
